    yeah I usually do some random chromatic stuff though, like ill do the norm, but them just mix it up to keep my fingers guessing haha.

      I think you should only fret one note at a time.

        When I play my "spider" chromatic exercise (taught to me by my first teacher as a warm up), I don't move a finger off a string to the next note until just before I need it again.

        --0-1-2-3-4--
        --0-1-2-3---
        --0-1-2-3-4--
        --0-1-2-3-4--
        --0-1-2-3-4--
        --0-1-2-3-4--

        I play this ascending only. It's one finger per fret and mastering it was pretty tough. Since then, I tend to keep my fingers static until I need to move them. It helped clean up alot of my runs.

          I keep them down.
          Must try lifting as an alternate self-torture method.

          Try this for interesting self-torture that actually has a real-world payback, depending on where you use it... what key, etc... you'll find a home for it.

          1_34 (E string)
          1_34 (A string)
          move up 2 frets
          12_4 (E string)
          12_4 (A string)
          move back 2 frets, drop down to the A string... repeat pattern
          reverse, and come back up to the fat E string


          It gives you finger combos that are strange, plus moving up/back/down, etc.

          Cramps are included as a bonus!

              fwiw, speed mechanics by troy stetina says to lift the other finger immediately after you fret the next one. iow, only one finger is fretting while doing single line work. ymmv.
