This is why I love my PC1. Volume knob is close enough to grab in a hurry, but far enough away that it does not get in the way.
Strats piss me off. Every one I've ever owned gets the volume knob relocated.
I never use volume swells because I play with too much gain for them to sound good. I used to hate the knob placement on my Jackson, but eventually I got used to it and don't worry about hitting it anymore. Ideally though, my guitar would only have a pickup selector on it with no volume or tone knobs... Nile style.

That would be insane... but you'd need a mighty good noise cutter, no?
I'll do swells ocaisionally and like the knob placement for that but it has gotten in the way more than a time or two of diving with the trem.So much so that I allways check the bar position before diving which can be distracting at times.
I would always go to a pedal, if I have some swells planned. I like the Jackson knob placement, more because it allows me to make quick adjustments to find just the right amount of signal for the tone I want for a part. On my other guitars, I have to wait for some space in the part before I can make a move for the knob.
On Jacksons, I tend to turn down the guitar when I start getting wild; on Strats, I tend to switch to the bridge pickup. I don't really have a problem with either situation, it usually makes things a little more dynamic and interesting.
I hardly do swells ever, other than to fade the sound in or out at the start/end of some songs, and you don't need the knob right next to the strings to do that. The Jackson knob placement pisses the hell off of me sometimes, but most of you already know that. Yes, I have holes in my guitars.
It's been years since I used a volume pedal too, but if I'd have to do some serious volume swells, that pedal would be the first thing I'd dig out of the drawer.
