• Re: Once again.....PICKS!!!!

Agreed. I'm still using Dunlop Tortex 0.60mm standard sized picks on my acoustics, but I just feel a little more comfortable with a slightly smaller pick for electric. And yes, stiffness is a necessity for me for speed, but I prefer a thinner stiff pick as opposed to a thicker one like the Gators or Stubbies.

Dunlop Jazz III all the way. I tried the 3mm stubbies and they are just way too thick. I don't personally find any difference between the red and black Jazz IIIs other than the fact that red is much easier to keep track of.

I agree that the red ones are much easier to find, but for some reason they seem slipperier to me than the black ones. I wish you could get those Ultex picks in the Jazz III size. Those never slip (for me).

Take a hobby knife and carve some Xs on the gripping surface on both sides. That'll roughen it up and you'll be able to grip it better.

For me, the raised text on those picks is a welcome improvement over my smooth/flat Dunlop Tortex tear drops.

Yeah, yeah, I know, we've discussed this a few times. It's been a while, so what are you currently using? I'm still with the Jim Dunlop Big Stubby in 2mm thickness:

I use custom picks made out of cherrywood, ebony, among other thigns (my stepdad is a woodworker and lays hardwood floors so i get some cool hardwood from him, i had to order the ebony piece from a cabinet maker though)

those picks he makes for me are great sounding and easy on the fingers, i keep them at about 2.0mm

other ones i use are dunlop gator grip 2.0 mm and 1.5mm

I lost my old thin copper pick many years ago. I'd actually like to try that type again. Are they available today?

Hey jackson1,
I see the Hot Licks copper picks are available HERE.
I love 'em. I get the thickest ones (.010), but they're still amazingly thin, while quite inflexible. They're great.

Thanks quicksilver, they sure got many different picks! I'll try and get one locally.

I recently switched over to the Gator Grip 2mms from the 1.14 Tortex picks, but I don't like how the Gator Grips seem to be smaller than the Tortex are, but I like the thickness. I'm never satisfied!!

the gator grips don't wear down as easily i find. I love them for being an affordable, non-custom pick thats actually practical.

I found Gators to wear down extremely quickly, for whatever reason. What's your secret?

I just got a whole bunch of Musicians Friend picks for a buck a dozen. Pretty much fender heavys. Seem to last longer.

Me too! I like the Gator picks, but after playing for a few hours, it was worn considerably. Recently I've been using the Everly Star Grip .88mm. It seemed kind of a gimmick at first, but after trying them I found they really do stay in place. Great for speeding!
