• playing slowly at first....

I know the general advice for playing guitar solos is to take it slowly at first, but has anyone ever played stuff slowly (when first practicing it) and it sound NOTHING like the recording?

Yup. Keep at it; you'll get it.

You should also maintain the individual note timing (i.e. intro to Fade To Black - that arpeggiated run on the first 3 strings around the 15th fret - play each note slowly, but at a tempo that is an exponent of the original tempo (quarter notes for 8th notes, 8th notes for 16ths, etc)
That will keep it sounding like the real thing, and also prepare you for playing it full speed.
I screwed up and learned it the wrong way - giving each note the same tempo - and it still gives me fits.
