Re: Paul Gilbert Vs. Troy Stetina....

    dg,
I have viewed a couple of Frank Gambale's videos and he is definitely a great player. He uses economy picking instead of straight alternate picking. It definitely works for him and I know others like it. I prefer using straight alternate picking, unless I'm playing arpeggios then I'll use sweep picking for that.

This article explains economy picking in better detail than I can and will give you an idea on the way Frank picks on the videos I watched.

Here is a sweep picking article that I found over there as well that might be helpful, but I really haven't read it myself.

      Fragger,
I thought you might like it and it would get you started until you got the video.

I found this review of the video that you might like to read.

Here is another article on Paul Gilbert by the same guy and this shows you quite a few of the exercises/licks that is covered on the video.

I found this to be a very cool learning site with good info and best of all it's free.

Cool site, JDA! I hadn't seen that one before. It's really well organized & full of good stuff. I'm with you as far as alt vs. economy picking. On the few occasions when I've tried to use it, I have trouble getting the pick attack & tempo right (much like with sweeping), but I can see where it could really be useful for high-speed situations.

            dg,
I ran across that site a couple of months back and thought is was very cool and the lessons were of high quality and explained well.

I agree with you 100% that the attack & tempo is the diffilcult part with the econonmy of picking, plus you have to almost have pre-planned licks to use it fluently (at least for me). Though I know others who play that way very well. I can see were the less right hand picking movement movement would be of benefit for speed.

I have a Michael Angelo video Speed Kills and he demonstrates both ways of picking and being able to play both ways on some of the exercises and that makes sense so one doesn't limit their self.

On the other hand I have an older Michael Angelo Star Licks video where he strictly uses strict alternate picking (except for arpeggios) and he basically doesn't recommend economy picking on that tape.

            Regards, JD...
