I learned a whole shitload of finger strength/dexterity excersizes when I was at MI, and everyone and their mother has their own technique for doing it the "proper" way. I have ADD, and I get bored as piss doing amelodic finger excersizes. I try and write my music at a level that I cannot quite play, and then I practice it until I can nail it consistently, then I practice it faster and faster until it turns into a whirlwind of blurry noise. Then I back off to where you can barely distinguish the notes. Of course, I play death metal and for me to play at a level that I am comfortable with, I have to be pretty DAMN fast. I'm getting there. Also since I am good friends with some of the best guitar players in death metal(Disgorge, Cephalic Carnage, Hate Eternal, etc) for me to play guitar in front of them I try real hard to get to a level where I am not just totally intimidated by their speed and ability. I am still nowhere near as good as most of my fiends in the bigger death metal bands, but I am getting better and better.
I still use an exercise I learned from Dan Spitz (ex-Anthrax) in an old Guitar World magazine. He used all four fingers, starting on the low E string, frets 1, 2, 3, 4... moved that pattern up the neck with the A string with frets 2, 3, 4, 5, D string 3, 4, 5, 6, etc. across all strings, then back across from high to low. When you get to the top of the fretboard, reverse it starting at the pinky and work your way back down again and end up back on fret 1.
I feel my soul go cold... only the dead are smiling.
thats awesome dude, I know the feeling to a lesser extent, the guy that plays lead guitar for my band is a prodigy, and possibly the best guitarist to come out of my area ever, playing around him just embarasses me and makes me practice even harder after the rehearsals, its crazy
I've just been running scales with a metronome trying to go as fast as i can. this isn't really an exercise on finger strength as much as it is on speed , but i felt an improvement in strength too. Then again, i'm a beginner and it probably wouldn't work for someone who's playing for a longer time
I (also) use a FlexGrip. You can get them just about anywhere; music shops, Musician's Friend, sports/sporting good stores, etc. They come in four strengths yellow (3lbs per finger), blue (5lbs per finger), red (7lbs per finger) and black (9lbs per finger). I started with a blue one back when I nearly lost my fret hand to a break in a car accident. I can now do almost endless reps with the black one. Oh yeah, you can't get the black ones from music places, only sports stores. No, I have no stock in them and I don't sell them.
