  • Need some tips, advice, helping hand.....

Ok here's my deal. I'm 45 years old. I picked up guitar at age 12 and began playing in bands at age 15. I played up until my band decided to call it quits, after 14 years and fewer places to play, we agreed it was a good idea. So my stuff sat and gathered dust for a while. So... I sold it all....(<---- insert "DUMBASS" sign here). And hadn't played for 8 years until about 2 weeks ago.

Well in the meantime, my diabetes got bad, my kidneys have failed and I am now a full-time dialysis patient. I have diabetic neuropathy of the feet/legs and hands, I have to use a walker to get around now. The neuropathy has caused a loss of strength in my fingers, especially my thumbs.....which leads me to the following question for help, tips, advice....:
I have a very tough time holding a pick between my thumb/forefinger. Any ideas on how to keep a pick stationary? Any modifications to my picks? Or technique? ANY advice would be sooooooo appreciated! My left hand still remembers all the notes, just need to build back the dexterity.
Thanks for hearin me out! Rock On!

I don't know anything about neuropathy - could you get one of those finger/hand exercise tools and build up some strength to fight it?

Neuropathy is a deadening of the nerves in the affected areas. I'm gonna try the thumb pick thing and the conditioning thing also, but, see it's still a problem as it's still like not feeling a thumb there so there's still that control problem. BUT, I will get something figured out. Mark Knoppfler method if all else fails!
        Thanks guys!

Also try covering the top part of your pick, where you grip it, with grip tape. You know, the sandpaper tape that you use on skateboards. Maybe try using thicker picks as well. They may be easier for you to grab. Whatever you do, KEEP PLAYING!!

That sucks, I just wish I could help out.
At least I didn't sell too much after I got burned out on music.
