  • My new-found practice routine

Today I was on Ultimate Guitar and I found an article (post #6 has a link) that really inspired me and I wrote a solid practice routine. This might be helpful to the lot you, but I'm also looking for tips to make it more complete.

    Practice Plan
(each section below takes around 30 minutes)

    Warm up runs (1234-124-134-1324-etc)
    Stretch Runs
    Trilled stretch runs
    Trills
    -
    Light Metronome leads/licks
Metronome work to improve picking clarity
Metronome work to progressively speed picking
    Clarity on picking (slower)
    -
    Arpeggios Major and Minor
    Fragmented arpeggios
Arpeggios on metronome for clarity (slow)
    Arpeggios on metronome for speed
Clarity on "sweep" movement (slow, then fast)
    -
    Bend pitch test
    Bend vibrato consistency
    Bending with hammer-ons
    Bending with slides
    -
    (song that applies techniques)
    -
    Ending warm up
    Finish
    --------------------------

    Thanks!

My "routine" these days is to pick up the guitar and improvise randomly for somehwere between 10 seconds and 3-4 hours.

I got totally burned out on strict stuff like that a few years ago and have not gone back to it since then.

That could've just been because you didn't set a specific goal to get to?

My goal was unrealistic. I wanted to play Altitudes after playing guitar for less than a year.

Hell I STILL can't play it after 4 years.

Yea, I should have put it in my first post. It's http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/colum...in_relief.html and there's a really really helpful interactive survey here: http://www.tomhess.net/HowEffectiveA...icalGoals.aspx

My short term goal is to learn the first part of "Inferno" by Symphony X before the power chords come in. It's pretty catchy, you should check it out! :P

I got The Odyssey right when it came out, love that track.

I still need to get Paradise Lost. I don't normally like heavier stuff, but I am a fan of Symphony X's take on it.
