The riffs he came up with are deffinately inspiring. The fact that they are also tuned down a step and a half. MAkes them ominous ,dark and menacing. The combo of the down tuning and the riffs. Makes Iommi an icon among icons. And to do it all missing the tips on two fo his fingers and using prostetic finger tips for all those riffs. Makes him a metal god.

Chopping of his digits was the best thing that ever happend..it was a necessary evil (pun). He tuned down so that the strings would be much easier to play/bend after his accident. THAT sound, along with old horror movies inspired his imagination.

He took the name Black Sabbath from the 1965 Horror trilogy..including a story w/ Boris Karloff..cool movie!

      Donnie Swanstrom 01/25/06..miss ya!

I lost my virginity with "The Thrill of it all" playing in the background

Sabbath Bloody Sabbath and Aerosmiths "Get Your Wings" are the 2 albums my older sister brought home one day way back when I was a little lad, that completely changed my life and made me pick up a guitar in the first place.
If this is our perdition, will you walk with me?

I am just hoping that your older sister wasn't the one that was listening to "The Thrill of it all" with you....zing, just kidding.

Iommi was the reason I picked up a guitar. Bought We Sold our Soul and the two Dio/Sabbath albums and was overwhelmed with the groove ridden and dark riffs.

Into the void was the most awesome song I ahve ever seen live.

Supernaut, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, Neon Knights...never ending list of Awesomeness.

            Iommi is great.

The fact that he's partly to blame for the turgid, Drop-Z drivel that is considered metal these days takes the sheen off a little, though
            Why so serious?

Ive been trying to tell that to a guy I work with for the past few months and he still fails to see it...

Iommi is the reason I picked up a guitar, and I always end playing some Sabbath when I pick up my guitar

Black Sabbath was the most awesome stuff back in the '70's. Their only competition at the time was Deep Purple according to Circus magazine ... I mean ... Deep Purple ??? Two different kinds of stuff there huh ?? Sabbath was like a wall of power that kicked your nuts so far into your pelvis you had your own personal axe wound after hearing it !!! Iommi made a huge impression on me and still to this day Black Sabbath Rules !!!!!

heartfielder, go listen to DP's "Made in Japan" album before you go too far down that line of thought... or "In Rock". Different road, similar destination. Purple could kick yer ass pretty damn hard too back in the day.

But yeah, Iommi... so much of what we now call metal is really just a footnote to the first few Sabbath albums. He is an absolute giant, and he's still doing it. He sure as hell influenced me... "Paranoid" was the first solo I learned note-for-note... and he probably influenced just about everyone else reading this board, and most everyone playing metal nowadays, directly or indirectly.

Toni should have a hell of a lot of money. He sold all of the early stuff on albums and maybe even 8 track. I know he sold it on cassette because that is what we listened to it on. Now those albums are selling on CD's.

                        Yo Jac,

I'm well aware of what's on Made in Japan. It's my favorite Deep Purple recording. But still Sabbath gives you a different kinda hurt !!! Agreed ???

Sabbath made some really bad business decisions at the time and kinda got screwed. Toni probably made more money on the last tour with Ozzy than he got off Sabbath.

Toni is da man. I was in a Black Sabbath Tribute Band and never really got tired of the stuff. Sure some of it was simple a hell, but some of it aint.

True dat. Most people only know Paranoid (the album), which has some of the easiest riffs known to man (Paranoid, WarPigs, Iron Man), as well as their most popular songs, but Master Of Reality (3rd album) has the crushingest riffs (Into The Void) and more complex arrangements (Lord Of This World).

Sabbath Bloody Sabbath is even more complex. Not very many "easy" songs on it (as compared to Paranoid or Iron Man).

The Dio years also had some great songs that were more technically advanced with regards to the guitar riffs and solos, but sadly I only got into those albums in recent years, so I'm not as well-versed in them as I am the Ozzy years.
