  • Getting used to flatter neck radius

Hello all. Very long, long, long time strat player here just getting into my new Jackson. Ok, so I am used to playing my Strat's with the 9.5" radius fretboard and now I've got this 14"~16" radius fretboard and it is quite a difference. The problem I'm having is that somewhere on my left hand, it is brazing on the B and high E strings just enough to cause these overtones while playing power chords (mostly palm muted) on the 6th and 5th strings. I'm sure this is what it is because with a 9.5" radius, these strings would normally be angled away from my hand. Has anyone else experienced this and if so, did you find that you had to angle your hand differently to adjust for the flatter fretboard? Thanks.

I have learned the habit of using my picking hand fingers to hold those strings down to keep it clean, actually when i run on the neck i use those fingers to hold the strings higher down and my thumb to mute the lower strings. I think this is what you mean you are getting unwanted strings sounding? I go back and forth between shredders and my strat the only difference really is the action is higher on the strat and the strings are stiffer.

well ok not really the only difference, my charvels feel different, the neck is chunkier i guess, obviously cuz its made to make it easy to play fast with low action but i can shred on my strat it just feels different and takes a little more effort i guess. Anyways, try using your fingers to block those strings with practice it becomes automatic you just find yourself doing it, to keep it clean at high gain cuz any little noise on the pickups will be amplified like crazy.

That's exactly the sound I'm getting, unwanted strings sounding and vibrating. I'll try using my free picking hand fingers to mute those. It sounds ackward to think of it but I'll give it a try nonetheless. I got to do something about it. Funny, it always seems to be mostly the B string. Damn B string . . .

yeh well i learned that from a rusty cooley tutorial i think , idk how some guys like shawn lane did it really i watch his picking hand and i think and it seems like he doesnt even need to mute at all. Also you might wanna see how u are holding the neck if are reaching u want to have your thumb under the neck this will raise your fingers up and they won't hit the strings however I am just sorta not disciplined at all to do this, so my thumb and fingers are necessary for muting unwanted strings and while I am not ultra clean I am much cleaner without having to relearn entirely how to play again.

Yeah, my left hand is lazy for sure. I always see my thumb poking out from under the neck, and like you said this causes my hand to sit lower to the strings. I'll work on some techniques. Thanks.

Yah, i dunno i found the flat necks to be easier for my hands but my problems were more involved with very fast picking across strings cleanly rather than my hand hitting the strings, I adapted to the flatter necks very easily they feel more natural to my hands. I really don't know if I like the strat I am undecided, I prefer Les Pauls tbqh but it was a gift and I can't really trade it that would be sort of uncool.
