  • What pick?

Need suggestions for a pick. I am very much a beginner and 99.9% of my playing is of a rhythm nature...no leads =] From what I have read, and what I have experienced, it would seem a thinner pick would be best for me, but how thin? What material? What brand?

Going to go and get a double-stand and some picks tomorrow, so any and all help is appreciated...thanks!

wheres that pic of rons face around the search bar that was brilliant , this has been discussed in loads of threads before.

my advice would be a jazz 3 or a tortex, why wont you be playing any leads surely its best to play both rhythm and leads
Say, I smell bacon.Does anyone else smell bacon?
Yeah, I definitely smell a pork product of some type.

I won't be doing many leads as I am just a hack drummer who likes to "play" guitar. I can play fifths and palm-mute as well as most of you, but it ends there

I am in the process (at age 38) of trying to learn notes, chords, etc, along with an old guitarist friend of mine. We plan to jam/record a bit this winter, so I will be able to pick up more of the basics from him. But, at this stage of the game, I don't foresee needing to know how to play leads...I have a TON of stuff yet to learn/practice in the basics first...and I am an old man

I use Dunlop Ultex Standard 1.14 mm

I dont know if your looking for something like this....but it works for me, and it lasts forever. Every other pick I used ended as dust on my guitar.

The tiny red Jazz III!!!! It makes sliced bread look like crap.

              I use a V-pick most of the time so its pretty thick.For Dunlop I use a 1.5.
I tend to get a lot of "chatter"using a very thin pick.
I'm a rhythm player for the most part but can play a lead if forced to.

My advice would be to get a few different shapes and a few different thicknesses and see what you like the best. With pics there isn't a right or wrong as its all preference. No matter your level of expertise you'll notice the difference between your selections.

The cool thing about guitar pics is, that while there are so many variations available, most cost about 25 to 50 cents each.

I use the red Jazz II's, cause I don't like the sharp point of the III's, but they would be my second choice for sure. I love 'em small.

I agree with Biff. They're cheap, so buy a few different kinds and see what agrees with you. Just 'cuz some famous guy uses a certain pick doesn't mean they'll work for you. For instance, the jazz 3's drive me nuts. Me, I like 'em heavy, so I use Dunlop 208's.
I'm not afraid to bleed, but I won't do it for you.

                        Thanks all...

I have some Tortex Dunlops in .88, which have been good, but I stopped by the shop yesterday and he had Gators on clearance for $1.99/dozen. He only had two sizes left, the .96 and the .58, so I picked up a dozen of each.

For rhythm, I am really digging the .58s. Being a hack, they allow me to alternate pick a groove, say the low E, much easier since they are so flexible.

So, have those three sizes to keep me busy, and I am liking the Gators so far.
