I'm looking for a PC based recording program. The last time I did any recording was about ten years ago with 1/2" reel to reel and also a Tascam portastudio. I want something easy. I tried Sony Acid and it was lame. Also played with some cakewalk a few years ago and seemed to complicated for some quick demos. Thanks.

You will want to make sure you have a good interface as well. A regular sound card will probably give you problems in the long run.http://www.jacknapalm.com/

I have a Rolls RM203x Line Mixer. Plug my preamp stuff into that and run it into the Line In of my Soundblaster Audigy.
There are a whole range of interfaces, from USB to PCI (internal) cards, each with various amounts and types of connections (RCA, 1/4", 1/8", etc).
You could keep the Akai and use it as an interface for the PC - just run from the RCA Outputs into your soundcard's Line In, though I do recommend getting a card that is at least one step above the motherboard's built-in setup.
Of course that depends on your MOBO as well - some of the newer ones actually have decent sound (5 and 7.1 surround) compared to the older ones.
Your biggest issue with a soundcard is going to be latency - the time it takes sound to go from the Input, through the processor and recording app and written to the hard drive, and then back out to the speakers. Obviously lower numbers are better in this case. These are basically delay times, just like you'd have with a Delay effect or the Delay in a Chorus or Reverb effect, except you can do very little to adjust them in the PC's interface.
Some folks bag on anything Soundblaster, but in all honesty unless you're running a full-on pro-level studio where you need the absolute best and biggest PC interface (i.e. mulitple inputs going at once so you can track guitars, drums, vocals, synths, etc all at once), a Soundblaster card or Audigy system will do just fine for less than the cost of a MexiStrat.I want to depart this world the same way I arrived; screaming and covered in someone else's blood

Or if I want to use it in a studio where I charge people to record their tracks I gotta pay extra? I don't think so.I want to depart this world the same way I arrived; screaming and covered in someone else's blood
