True, and looking back i realize mass was the wrong word choice
But just take what i mean at surface level, if you were to hook up both to a machine, the thinner and smaller tip would go faster, because there is less material to hit the strings. It's like comparing the point end of a pen to the blunt end, theres no comparison. But yea i TOTALLY get what you mean, and there could be another big debate about that as well.

If you had them hooked up to a machine set to oscillate at an even rate, they'd still go at the same speed.

I see what you mean, but still, it's kinda wrong. See, the thinner pick would flex, and therefore there would be far more play on the string than say, the 1.38mm Jazz III, therefore the string would spring later with the thinner pick. HOWEVER, that is a variable, because you can hold the pick closer to its tip, reducing the play. Also, there are other variables, such as material, the actual thickness, and most importantly, the power at which the pick is swung, among others. More power applied to say, a .48mm pick, will twist it more, whereas a Jazz II swung at the same power will not bend/twist as much (Barely any, if at all). Another thing is the angle at which the pick is held, and at which the string is hit. Angling on the thin picks reduces the amount the pick will bend, however the pick may not travel perpendiculary towards the string, and that will also affect how much it will bend.

All in all, even with all these variables taken, the Jazz III will not bend, the pick will spend a minimal amount of time in contact to the string, while a thinner pick will flex more, and how much, that depends on where the pick is held, its angle, material, etc. Having that in mind, the pick will not perform the same to what's expected of it, as often as the Jazz III, so you can't say its tip will perform in such and such a way compared to jazz three.

To say that the 'thinner and smaller tip would go faster, because there is less material to hit the strings' is kind of going against the statement you made first, that Jazz 3 will go faster than the thin pick (1.38 is generally accepted to be a heavy gauge, when gauges around .71 are what are called Mediums, most of the time). So really, they both go at the same speed, if the picking speed is the same (you contradicted yourself in that respect in your post), with more flex in the thinner tip, making you think you're picking slower. Mass, friction, shape of tip, none of that make your wrist/elbow move any quicker, it's the flex of the pick that dictates how much movement of your hand is required to pick the string properly, and range of motion isn't picking speed.Really, where I'm getting at is that I'm in a mood to bullshit today!

I totally agree from using Standard Tortex picks. Think I should switch to Jazz III's too?

The extra size of other picks seem pointless after you get use to Jazz IIIs.

I tried the Jazz III's once after others were raving about them, but uh no thanks! They're not for me. I'm sticking with my Tortex Purple or Green picks.

Been using my Jazz III's for almost a year and a half. Switched from black ones to the black Tortex Jazz III's, they are a 1.14mm. Love them, best picks ever.

Same here! Any time I use another pick these days I get that effect. I won't use anything else on electric, but I still use the 1mm blue Tortex on the rare occasions I fool around with an acoustic.

Jim Dunlop U.S.A 1.0mm [Big Stubby] sharp edge,you can get a really scratchy sound...If you like? I like!

I used the blue 2mm ones for about a year. They had a bit too much "click" for my tastes. Also, I've carried picks in my wallet for about 20 years and the Big Stubbys would sometimes actually break in there.

I've been using Big Stubby 3.0mm for a couple years too... those who have experience with both the Big Stubby and Jazz III.... how different are they?

I could never quite get used to the thickness of the 2.0mm Stubbies. There's something about having my index finger and thumb seperated that far that just didn't feel right.

Jazz III XL series are for the ones who are not willing to get used to their tiny scale..It's pretty cool, I've been using them.
