Anybody have one of those licks that's just so ingrained in your muscle memory that it just comes out at the wrong times and sounds terrible?
So, I made this recording of myself, and I hear this really weak and sour sounding lick, and I realize - I play it all the time. Its like a comfortable "moving" lick - meaning, my hands do it naturally when I move up the neck, like from a rhythm part to a lead part. Let me try to draw it - its actually just a little pentatonic lick:
------------------------
------------------------
------------12----------
-----12-14-----14~~---
-/14--------------------
------------------------
Slide up to the 5th string B, maybe a little 1/4 bend on the 3rd string G and vibrato on the 4th string E.
I'll wack this lick out like crazy if I'm not careful - like my fingers just want to do it. Any key - E, A, G - starting solos, ending solos - middle of solos. And the worst part is, when I play it, my fingers kind of freeze and take a little rest - like they're saying, "we just played the greatest lick ever - relax and bask in it!"
Anywho - I'm actively trying not to play this sequence of notes any more - trying to reverse the muscle memory.
Anyone have similar "hated" licks in their playing? Anyone get over something like this?
On a side note - I'm not really sure why this lick sounds so bad - maybe its my reaction to it?
