  • A horrible lick you can't stop yourself from playing?

Anybody have one of those licks that's just so ingrained in your muscle memory that it just comes out at the wrong times and sounds terrible?

So, I made this recording of myself, and I hear this really weak and sour sounding lick, and I realize - I play it all the time. Its like a comfortable "moving" lick - meaning, my hands do it naturally when I move up the neck, like from a rhythm part to a lead part. Let me try to draw it - its actually just a little pentatonic lick:

    ------------------------
    ------------------------
    ------------12----------
    -----12-14-----14~~---
    -/14--------------------
    ------------------------

Slide up to the 5th string B, maybe a little 1/4 bend on the 3rd string G and vibrato on the 4th string E.

I'll wack this lick out like crazy if I'm not careful - like my fingers just want to do it. Any key - E, A, G - starting solos, ending solos - middle of solos. And the worst part is, when I play it, my fingers kind of freeze and take a little rest - like they're saying, "we just played the greatest lick ever - relax and bask in it!"

Anywho - I'm actively trying not to play this sequence of notes any more - trying to reverse the muscle memory.

Anyone have similar "hated" licks in their playing? Anyone get over something like this?

On a side note - I'm not really sure why this lick sounds so bad - maybe its my reaction to it?

That rolling-finger pull-off Pentatonic lick on the first 3 frets (found in everything from Country players to Rhoads to Angus). It's a classic lick but it's just filler.

Other than that, everything I play is gold
I want to depart this world the same way I arrived; screaming and covered in someone else's blood

I'm sure nearly every player has at least one of those floating around. I used to have several annoying "licks" that would crop up in my improvised playing... I just decided to consciously "retire" them.

I do this all the time and it's really annoying. All I do is blues pentatonic shit - I really need to branch out but it's ingrained in me.

                  My own was

                  12B----12---10^12^10------10----------10-----------10-
                  ------------------------12-----12-----10-----12-----10--
                  ---------------------------------------------------------
                  ---------------------------------------------------------
                  ---------------------------------------------------------
                  ---------------------------------------------------------

Kind of has a country pop/bluesy feel to it whenever I play it.
Is that a banana in your pants or are you just happy to see me?

Turk, nothing wrong with that lick, it's how you phrase it that counts.
Shake the fukk out of those strings I say.

Learn some tunes or make up some tunes. Separate your "improvisation" time from your actual practice or playing or writing time. You have to make a conscious decision to do this, or you may wind up wasting alot of time.
